It is an upmarket residential street of Mumbai, situated in South Mumbai. There are several old-style bungalows and apartment houses, including Kamal Mahal, the art décor of film director Kamal Amrohi. The Modys, the Commissariats, the Dahanukars, the Somaiyas, the Lalbhais, the Walchands, and the Morarjees have all lived on this street and in the neighboring neighborhood.

This road has gained popularity also because it has been official residences of the Governor of Reserve Bank of India and notable people such as Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of Aditya Birla Group.

History OF Carmichael Road

David Fremantle Carmichael, a former member of the Madras Legislative Council and British Indian Civil servant, is most likely the street’s name. The street’s steep slopes began to be developed in the 1920s, with the mansion of Mumbai’s Municipal Commissioner being among the first, and by 1930, numerous huge homes had sprung up on the street, many of which cost between Rs 100,000 and Rs 150,000 at the time.

The road is a designated heritage precinct and falls within Coastal Regulation Zone-2, which has a height restriction of 75 to 80 meters, which means that structures can only be 25 stories high.

The Usha Kiran, a 25-story structure built in the mid-1960s, is the only high-rise building on the road. Mumbai architect Dilawar Noorani of Karim Noorani & Co created the Usha Kiran building. Except for a “cessed structure” that has tenants or was built before 1940, redevelopment on the road is subject to heritage regulations.
