Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan Zoo clearly reflects the British heritage of the original Victorian gardens and the Victorian approach to collecting animals during the zoo’s creation. You will need about 2-3 hours to walk around Mumbai Zoo and see the animals.
Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan has a diverse flora and fauna. It’s about 853 species of plants, over 3,000 trees, wild animals, birds, and the only historical botanical garden in Mumbai.

Even after Mumbai Zoo was renamed Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan, people still refer to it as Rani Baugh (or Bagh) or Byculla Zoo. Later, residents started calling it Ranichi Bagh (Royal Garden).
After India’s independence, Wirmata Jijabai Bhonsale Udyan was named after Jijamatha, the mother of the first Marathi emperor, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Jijamata Udyan was initially known as Raanichi Baug from the British name Victoria Gardens and is currently also known as Veermata Jijabai Udyan & Zoo.
Jijamata Udyan, formerly known as Rani Bagh, which means Queen’s Garden, is the only zoo in Mumbai. Its a 50-acre zoo and garden located in Byculla, Downtown Mumbai India City of Mumbai, India.
