1st Tenali Raman Story

Once King Krishnadev Rai was discussing with his courtiers. While discussing, suddenly the discussion started on cleverness. In the court of Maharaj Krishnadev Rai, everyone from Rajguru to many other courtiers were jealous of Tenali Ram. In such a situation, to humiliate Tenaliram, a minister said in the court, “Maharaj! There are many intelligent and clever people present in the court and if given a chance, we all can present our cleverness in front of you, but?”

Maharaj Krishnadev was surprised and asked, “But what about the Minister?” On this the commander said, “Maharaj! Let me tell you what is in the minister’s mind. Actually, in this court no one except Tenali Ram is given a chance to prove his cleverness. Every time it is Tenali Ram who takes the credit for his cleverness, so how can the rest of the court show their abilities in such a situation?”

After listening to the words of Maharaj Krishnadev Rai Senapati, he understood that all the people of the court had come out against Tenali. After this, Maharaj remained silent for some time and started thinking in his mind. Then the Maharaj’s eyes fell on the incense burner burning in front of the idol of God. Seeing the incense sticks, the Maharaja thought of testing all the courtiers.

He immediately said, “All of you courtiers will definitely be given a chance to prove your cleverness. Until all the courtiers prove their cleverness, Tanali will not intervene.” Hearing this the people present in the court became happy. He said, “Okay Maharaj! Can you tell us what we have to do?” King Krishnadev Rai pointed his finger towards the incense stick and said, bring two hands of smoke for me. Whoever is able to do this work will be considered more intelligent than Tenali Ram.”

Hearing the words of the Maharaja, all the courtiers became thoughtful and started discussing among themselves how this is possible, can the smoke be measured? After this, all the courtiers tried their hand to prove their cleverness, but no one could measure the smoke. As soon as someone tried to measure the smoke, the smoke would fly out of their hands.

When all the courtiers accepted defeat, one of them said, “Maharaj! According to us, smoke cannot be measured. Yes, if Tenali can do this, we will consider him more intelligent than us, but if he cannot do this, then you will have to consider him just like us.” The king said smilingly, ‘Why Tenaliram! are your ready?” At this Tenaliram bowed his head and said, “Maharaj! I have always followed your orders. I will definitely do it this time too.”

After this Tenaliram called a servant and whispered something in his ear. Hearing his words the servant immediately went out of the court. There was silence all around in the court. Everyone was eager to see how Tenaliram defeats the king. Then everyone’s eyes fell on the servant, who had returned to the court with a two-foot long pipe made of glass.

Tenaliram placed the mouth of that glass tube on the smoke coming out of the incense stick. Within a short time, the entire glass tube was filled with smoke and Tenali quickly closed it by placing a cloth on the mouth of the tube and turning it towards Maharaj said, “Maharaj! Take two hands of smoke.” Seeing this, a smile appeared on the Maharaja’s face and he took the pipe from Tenali and looked towards the courtiers.

Everyone’s heads were bowed down in shame after seeing Tenaliram’s cleverness. There some courtiers were also in favor of Tenaliram. They all had respect for Tenaliram in their eyes. Seeing Tenaliram’s intelligence and cleverness, the king said, “Now you people must have understood that it is not possible to equal Tenaliram.” The courtiers could not say anything in response to this and they silently bowed their heads.

Moral of the Story: We should respect the intelligence of others and not be jealous of anyone’s cleverness.

2nd Tenali Rama Story

Once upon a time. King Krishnadev Rai was sitting in court in Vijayanagar. At the same time a beautiful woman came to the court with a box.

There was a velvet saree in that box, which she took out and started showing to the king and all the courtiers in the court. The saree was so beautiful that whoever saw it would be astonished.

The woman told the king that she makes such beautiful sarees. She has some artisans who weave this saree with their secret arts. She requested the king that if he gave her some money, she would make a similar saree for him too.

King Krishnadev Rai agreed to the woman’s request and gave her money. The woman asked for one year’s time to prepare the saree. After this, the woman started living in the king’s palace with her saree weavers and started weaving sarees.

During this period, the palace itself bore all the expenses of that woman and the artisans including food and drink. Similarly one year passed. Then the king sent his ministers to the woman to see the saree. When the minister went to the artisan, he was surprised to see. There two artisans were weaving something without any thread or cloth.

The woman told that her artisans were weaving sarees for the king, but the ministers told that they could not see any sarees. On this the woman said that only those people can see this saree, who have a clean mind and have not committed any sin in their life.

Hearing this from the woman, the king’s ministers became upset. He made an excuse and told the woman that he had seen the saree and left from there. Coming back to the king he said that the saree was very beautiful.

The king was very happy with this. The next day he ordered the woman to appear in the court with the saree. The woman came to the court the next day with her artisans carrying a box. She opened the box in the court and started showing the saree to everyone.

Everyone sitting in the court was very surprised, because none of the courtiers including the king could see any saree. Seeing this, Tenali Ram whispered in the king’s ear that the woman had lied. She is fooling everyone.

After this, Tenali Ram told the woman that he or any courtier sitting in the court could not see this saree.

Hearing this from Tenali Ram, the woman said that this saree will be visible only to the one whose mind is clean and has not committed any sin.

Hearing this from the woman, a plan came to Tenali Ram’s mind. He said to the woman – “The king wants you to come to the court wearing that saree yourself and show that saree to everyone.”

Hearing this from Tenali Ram, the woman started apologizing in front of the king. She told the king the truth that she had not made any saree. She was fooling everyone.

The king became very angry after listening to the woman. They sentenced her to prison, but when the woman pleaded, they forgave her and let her go. The king also praised Tenali Ram’s cleverness.

3rd Tenali Rama Story

Every time Tenaliram used his brain to do something that Maharaja Krishnadev of Vijay Nagar was stunned. This time with a trick he forced the king to reconsider his decision.

It happened that once King Krishnadev went to Kashmir for some work. There he saw a golden colored blooming flower. Maharaj liked that flower so much that he brought a plant of it with him while returning to his kingdom Vijayanagar.

As soon as he reached the palace, he called the gardener. As soon as the gardener arrived, the king said to him, “Look! Planting this plant in our garden at such a place that I can see it daily from my room. It will bloom with golden colored flowers, which I like very much. Take great care of this plant. If anything happens to him, you can even get death penalty.

The gardener nodded and took the plant from the king and planted it in a place visible from his room. The gardener took great care of that flower day and night. As the days passed, golden flowers started blooming in it. Every day, as soon as the king woke up, he would first see her and then go to the court. If any day the king had to go out of the palace, he would feel sad because of not being able to see that flower.

One day when the king came to his window in the morning to see the flower, he could not see the flower at all. Then he called the gardener.

The king asked the gardener, “Where is that plant?” Why can’t I see its flowers?

In response the gardener said, “Sir! My goat ate it yesterday evening.”

On hearing this his anger reached the seventh heaven. He directly ordered Rajmali to be sentenced to death after two days. Then soldiers came there and put him in jail.

As soon as the gardener’s wife came to know about this, she reached the court to complain to the king. The angry Maharaj did not listen to a single thing he said. She started leaving the court crying. Then a person advised him to meet Tenali Ram.

Crying, the gardener’s wife told Tenaliram about her husband’s death sentence and that golden flower. After listening to all his words, Tenaliram pacified him and sent him home.

The next day, the angry gardener’s wife takes the goat that eats the golden flowers to the crossroads and starts beating it with a stick. While doing this the goat became half dead. This kind of treatment of animals was forbidden in the Vijayanagara state. This was considered cruel, so some people complained about this action of the gardener’s wife to the city policeman.

After knowing the whole matter, the city police officers came to know that she was doing all this out of anger because of the punishment given to the gardener. As soon as the soldiers knew this, they took the matter to the court.

Maharaj Krishnaraj asked how can you behave so badly with an animal?

“Such a goat because of which my entire house is going to be destroyed. I am about to become a widow and my children are about to become orphans, how should I treat that goat, Maharaj?” the gardener’s wife replied.

King Krishnaraja said, “I could not understand what you meant. How can this dumb animal destroy your house?”

He said, “Sir! This is the same goat that ate your golden plant. Because of this you have sentenced my husband to death. This goat was at fault, but my husband is getting punished. This goat should actually be punished, that’s why I was beating it with a stick.”

Now the king understood that it was not the gardener’s fault, but the goat’s fault. As soon as he understood this, he asked the gardener’s wife that how did you get so much intelligence that you could explain my mistake in this way. She said, Maharaj, I couldn’t think of anything except crying. Pandit Tenaliram ji has explained all this to me.

Once again King Krishnarai felt proud of Tenaliram and said that Tenaliram you once again stopped me from making a big mistake. As soon as he said this, the Maharaja withdrew the death penalty decision of the gardener and ordered him to be released from jail. Also, fifty thousand gold coins were given as a gift to Tenali Ram for his intelligence.

4th Chaddanta Elephant Story

Centuries ago, two special species of elephants were found in the dense forests of the Himalayas. One species was named Chhaddant and the name of the other species was Uposatha. Among these, the Chhaddant species was quite famous. Due to the presence of six huge teeth, they were called Chhaddent. The head and feet of these elephants looked scarlet like gems. The king of these pseudo-tusked elephants used to live in Kanchan cave. He had two queens named Mahasubhadda and Chullasubhadda.

One day the king of elephants goes with his two queens to a nearby lake to take a bath. There was a huge old tree growing on the banks of the same lake. The flowers on that tree were very beautiful and had a pleasant fragrance. Gajraj playfully shook a branch of that tree with his trunk. Due to this, the flowers on the branch started falling on Mahasubhadda and she was very happy with Gajraj. At the same time, due to the age of the dry branch of the tree, it could not withstand the force of Gajraj’s trunk and it broke and fell on Gajraj’s second queen Chullasubhadda along with the flower.

Although this incident happened coincidentally, Chullasubhadda considered it an insult and immediately left Gajraj’s residence and went somewhere far away. When Gajraj came to know about this, he searched extensively for Chullasubhadda, but could not find her anywhere.

After some time Chullasubhadda died and after her death she was born as a princess of Madda kingdom. When she was young, she was married to the king of Varanasi and became the queen of Varanasi. Even after rebirth, she did not forget the insult accidentally caused by Chhaddantraj and kept thinking of taking revenge for it.

One day, getting an opportunity, he instigated the king of Varanasi to get the teeth of Chhaddantraj. As a result, the king sent a group of some skilled Nishads to bring back Gajraj’s teeth. Sonuttar was the leader of the group that set out to bring Gajraj’s teeth.

Sonuttar reached Gajraj’s residence after traveling for about 7 years. He made a big pit at some distance from his residence to catch Gajraj and make him his prey. To hide the pit, he covered it with leaves and small sticks and hid himself in the bushes.

As soon as Gajraj came near the pit, Sonuttar took out a poisoned arrow and aimed at Chhaddantraj. After being injured by an arrow, when Gajraj noticed Sonuttar hiding in the bushes, he ran to kill him. Since, Sonuttar had come wearing the clothes of ascetics. For this reason Gajraj gave life to Sonuttar.

After getting the gift of life from Gajraj, Sonuttar’s mind changed and he told the whole story to Gajraj and explained the purpose of targeting Gajraj. Due to being given the gift of life, Sonuttar could not cut Gajraj’s teeth, so Chhaddantraj himself broke his teeth before his death and gave them to Sonuttar.

After getting Gajraj’s teeth, Sonuttar returned to Varanasi and placed Gajraj’s teeth in front of the queen. Along with this, Sonuttar also told the queen how Gajraj gave her his life by giving his teeth.

After knowing the whole story, the queen could not bear the death of Gajraj and due to this shock, she also died immediately.

Moral of the Story: The feeling of revenge takes away the ability to think and understand.
