The story begins with the writer and a friend travelling to Basra together. At some point during their journey, the author expresses his desire to domesticate an otter after losing his pet dog, citing loneliness. His friend recommended that he get one from the marshes along the Tigris River in Iraq.

As they arrived at their destination, they discovered that only the friend’s mail had arrived. The buddy left while the narrator was still waiting for his mail. He went to his room and discovered an otter, accompanied by Arabs carrying a message. It took Mij some time to become acquainted with his surroundings. Mij enjoyed playing with water and learned to open the faucet himself.

The time had passed smoothly in Basra, and it was time to return to London. Because British airlines did not allow animals, he had to book another flight that allowed Mij on board, but in a box. The narrator placed him in a box an hour before the flight and then left for a meal.

When he returned, he discovered that the box was still there, with Mij having created holes and destroyed the internal lining. He became scared and rushed to the airport with only ten minutes until the flight took off. He described the entire incident to the air hostess, who advised him to keep the container on his lap.
