The Enemy Summary

“The Enemy” is a story about two soldiers from opposing armies during a major war. Dr. Sadao Hoki, a Japanese doctor, discovers an injured American soldier in a cave near his home. Despite the fact that they are enemies due to the war, Dr. Sadao decides to assist the wounded soldier.

Dr. Sadao takes the soldier to his home and treats him. This is a difficult decision for Dr. Sadao because assisting the enemy could cause problems for him and his family.

As the American soldier recovers, tensions rise in Dr. Sadao’s home. Hana, his wife, is terrified and initially disapproves of her husband’s assistance to the enemy. She later changes her mind and assists in the care of the soldier as well.

The Hoki family is faced with a dilemma because they must choose between being loyal to their country and being kind to others.

Finally, the problem is resolved when the American soldier quietly departs, thanking the Hoki family for their assistance. The story emphasizes the importance of being kind to others, even if they are from another country or are supposed to be your enemy.

It makes us consider how war affects people and how we can remain kind and understanding even when we are on opposing sides.

In summary “The Enemy” invites readers to consider the human cost of war and the ability to be compassionate even in the face of deep animosity. The story serves as a poignant reminder that, even when people are on opposing sides, they can find common ground and empathy in the most difficult circumstances.
