Aditya was born in Mumbai. His father was Punjabi. His mother’s name is Salome Roy Kapur who did modeling, she also worked with Deb Banerjee in the movie Tu Hi Meri Zindagi. She later she also became a film choreographer and is known for her choreography of the song Main Shayar To Nahi from the movie Bobby. He is the youngest of three siblings.
His older brother Siddharth Roy Kapur is the CEO of UTV Motion Pictures and is married to famous film actress Vidya Balan. His other older brother, Kunal Roy Kapur, is also an actor and has worked in such films as Delhi Belly and Nautanki Saala. He currently lives in Mumbai. Aditya is not a trained actor, but she has taken dance and diction classes to improve his Hindi. According to him, he had no intention of becoming an actor and was happy with VJ’s work on him until he was offered a role in London Dreams.
