CBSE Class 9 English If I Were You Summary

It begins with Gerrard, a dramatist, talking on the phone as he prepares to leave his house for a rehearsal. After hanging up the phone, he begins packing his travel bag. While doing his work, he notices an intruder who has quietly entered from his right side. Gerrard notices that the unknown man resembles him and is holding a revolver.

The intruder immediately asks Gerrard to raise his hands in the air. Gerrard, on the other hand, is uncharacteristically calm and does not panic at gunpoint. He begins chatting with the intruder and asks his name politely. The intruder begins interrogating Gerrard about his personal details. Gerrard requests that he speak in a comfortable position, so the intruder invites him to sit down on a chair. As they resume talking, he asks Gerrard if he lives alone and owns a car.

In response, the dramatist explains that his work requires him to travel frequently. One of his bags is always packed because he occasionally needs to travel for urgent work. Gerrard also tells the intruder that he frequently communicates with his tradesmen over the phone rather than meeting them in person.

Gerrard also inquires about the intruder’s whereabouts, and the latter informs him that he is a criminal who primarily steals jewelry. Furthermore, he murdered a police officer and intends to steal Gerrard’s identity by killing him in order to completely avoid arrest. Hearing this, Gerrard realizes that the intruder isn’t as smart as he had assumed.

He willfully manipulates the intruder into believing him. Gerrard quickly makes up a story and claims to have a mysterious life of his own. He persuades the intruder to believe his words and informs him that the police are also looking for Gerrard for a murder. Now, even if the intruder kills him, the police will catch him because of Gerrard’s crimes.

Surprisingly, the intruder believes Gerrard’s story when the latter instructs him to go to the garage and flee the house via that route. Gerrard opens the garage door, pushes the intruder inside the cupboard, and locks him up. He informs the police of the criminal’s whereabouts and turns him over to them. Thus, we can see that Gerrard’s mental clarity and alertness saved him from a potentially fatal situation.
