Satyajit Ray

Satyajit Ray is a legendary filmmaker who has made some of the most memorable films in India. He is known for his unique style and ability to tell stories in an interesting manner. His films are popular with both audiences and critics alike, making him one of the best directors ever!

Satyajit Ray is also an actor, musician, humanitarian and writer. He was born on April 21st 1921 in Kolkata (then called Calcutta). He went on to become one of India’s most celebrated filmmakers during the 1950s & 1960s before passing away at age 80 due to heart failure caused by diabetes mellitus type 1A

Guru Dutt

Guru Dutt is a legend in Indian cinema. He was born in Lahore, British India, on February 14th, 1924. His family moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) when he was five years old and he grew up there until 1947 when the city was captured by India’s army during its war for independence from Great Britain. After this event, Guru Dutt moved back to Lahore where he pursued his education at St Mary’s College High School before moving again—this time to Pune—where he completed college studies at St Xavier’s College University

Bimal Roy

Bimal Roy was a Bengali film director, producer and actor. He is known for his classic films like Ardeshir Irani, Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali and Kaal (1958), Do Bigha Zamin (1953), Chokher Bali (1954), Abhijan (1959) and Mother India(1957).

He has won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film for Do Bigha Zamin in 1963; he also received it for Mother India the same year.

Ritwik Ghatak

Ritwik Ghatak was a Bengali film director and screenwriter. His work is characterized by the use of natural lighting, long takes and expressive close-ups.

Ghatak’s most famous works include the first feature film in India to be made in colour (1949), The World of Apu (1951), Pather Panchali (1955) and Aparajito (1956).

Shyam Benegal

Shyam Benegal is a noted Indian film director. He has directed films such as Ankur, Ankur Aradhana, Bhuvan Shome and Dhanwaar. He was awarded Padma Shri by Government of India in 1977 and Padma Bhushan by Government of India in 2001 for his contribution to Indian cinema.

He was born on 5th October 1933 at Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh) into an orthodox family. His father was a police officer who later became an inspector general of police at Lucknow city where Shyam spent most part of his childhood until independence when he moved with his parents to Bombay where they lived till 1968 when they moved back again to Punjab.

Shyam started acting in plays while studying law at Allahabad University but decided against it after completion due to lacklustre pay scale offered by theatre managements.

He worked as a journalist before joining Filmistan Studio as assistant director under Guru Dutt during 1954-1955 period.1,2,3

Mani Ratnam

Mani Ratnam is a director from India who has directed films such as Bombay and Kaatru Veliyidai. He is known for his work in the South Indian film industry, which he began with the production of Bombay (1995). However, he is also known for his work on Telugu movies like Kadalora Kavithaalu (2001) and Thalapathi (2005).

Mani Ratnam has won multiple awards for his work in the South Indian film industry including two National Awards and two Filmfare Awards.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan

Adoor Gopalakrishnan is a filmmaker and producer from India. He is known for his works in Malayalam cinema, with his most notable being Chandranectti (2012), which won him the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Malayalam. He was also nominated for a Filmfare Award for Best Director and Screen Awards-South as Best Director.

Gopalakrishan founded the production company AGS Entertainment with friend Santhosh Sivan in 1992, but dropped out after their first film Thattathin Marayathu failed commercially at theatres.[1] The pair made their second attempt at making a film called Ithiriyaaraiyil Oru Kadithanam (1994) which was not successful either.[2]

Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap is a director from India. He is known for his realistic and gritty films.

He has directed the film Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. His other well-known work include Bombay Velvet (2013), Ritesh Batra’s NH10 (2013) and now Black Friday which will be released on January 23rd next year.

Vishal Bhardwaj

Vishal Bhardwaj is a director from India. He is the son of Mahesh Bhatt and Padma Shri award winner Manoj Kumar. He made his debut in the movie ‘Maachis’ which was released in 2003 and won him many awards and nominations at various film festivals around the world, including Cannes Film Festival (2003), Berlin International Film Festival (2005) and many more.

He also directed Blackmail starring Irrfan Khan & Tabu which was released in 2006 with positive reviews from critics as well as audience members across globe!

Sanjay Leela Bhansali

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a Indian film director, writer and producer. He is best known for his historical epic film, Saawariya (1999), which won him the National Film Award for Best Director and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

In addition to directing many Bollywood films, he has also directed several international productions such as Blackmail (2006) and My Name Is Khan (2010).
