Tara Rani Katha in English

Raja Sparsh was also one of those who believed in Goddess Bhagwati. He remained engrossed in his worship day and night. The king was not lacking anything. They just wanted a child. The king used to be somewhat depressed due to not having a child for years. One day, pleased with the king’s devotion, Mother Bhagwati appeared in his dream and blessed him with two daughters.

Shortly after receiving the blessing, a daughter was born to the king. In celebration of the birth of a daughter, the king gave a feast to everyone and called pundits to get the daughter’s horoscope made. Everyone said the same thing to the king that this is the true form of the goddess. Wherever he steps, there will be only happiness. This will be devotion to Goddess Bhagwati. Having said all this, the pundits named the girl Tara.

After some time, on Tuesday, another daughter was born to the king. The astrologers made his horoscope too and became sad. When the king asked him the reason for his sadness, the astrologers told him that this girl will bring a lot of sorrow in his life. The king asked the astrologers what bad deeds had I done that this person was born in my house.

Astrologers told that both your daughters used to be Apsaras of King Indra. Of these, the name of the elder sister was Tara and that of the younger one was Rukman. One day both of them went together to tour the earth. Both of them reached there and kept fast on the day of Ekadashi. Tara told her younger sister that today is Ekadashi fast, so go to the market and get some fresh fruits, but do not eat anything there.

Rukman went to the market to buy fruits. There he saw fish pakodas. He quickly ate them and took some fruits for his sister. Tara asked Rukman why didn’t you bring fruits for yourself? She replied that she had come after eating fish pakodas. Tara said angrily that you are a sinner. You ate fish on Ekadashi. For such bad karma, I curse you to become a lizard.

Now Tara’s sister started living in the same forest as a lizard. A well-known sage Guru Gorakh also lived there with some of his disciples. One of his disciples was very arrogant. Due to his pride, the disciple filled a Kamandal with water and started doing penance sitting alone. Just then a thirsty cow came there. He directly put his mouth in that kamandal and drank the water. As soon as the cow started to open its mouth after drinking water, the kamandalu fell down and the sage’s meditation got distracted.

The sage saw that the cow had drunk the water. Now the angry sage badly injured the cow with a tongs. When Guru Gorakh came to know about this, he immediately went to see the cow. As soon as he saw the condition of the cow, he threw his arrogant disciple out of the ashram. After a few days, he performed a yagya to atone for the sin caused by the atrocities committed on the mother cow.

The arrogant disciple who killed the cow with tongs also came to know about this yagya. He took the form of a bird and went straight to the yagya site and put a dead snake in the food with his beak. No one was aware of this. Rukman, the lizard who was cursed by Tara, was watching all this happening. It occurred to him that everyone would die after eating this. To save everyone’s life, Rukman, who became a lizard, fell on the food in front of everyone.
People cursed the lizard and started emptying the vessel. At the same time, the people organizing the Bhandara also saw a dead snake in the food. Then everyone realized that the lizard had deliberately fallen into the food to save everyone’s life.

Since he had such good thoughts despite being a lizard, all the important people present in the Yagya said that we should pray for the liberation of this lizard. The Pandit further told that due to everyone’s prayers, that lizard was born in the third birth as a daughter in the house of a glorious king like you. At the same time, Tara took second birth as ‘Taramati’ and married King Harishchandra of Ayodhya.

After saying all these things, the pundits advised King Sparsh to kill Rukman. On this the king said, “How can I kill a daughter? It would be a sin to do so. Then the astrologers said to put gold and silver in a box, put a girl inside it and float the box in water. Seeing the gold and silver in it, people will definitely take out the chest from the river and the girl’s life will be saved.

The king did exactly what the astrologers told him. Seeing a chest studded with gold and silver in the river, a Bhangi near Kashi took it out. He had no children, so he decided to raise the girl inside the box. Bhangi and his wife brought him up with great love and named him Rukko. As soon as she grew up, both of them got Rukko married. Rukko’s mother-in-law used to work as a cleaning lady in the palace of Taramati and King Harishchandra.

After a few days, Rukko’s mother-in-law became ill. Rukko started working there in his place. Taramati saw him and recognized him because of the virtue of his old birth and told him to sit with her. Rukko said that I am a prostitute, hence I cannot sit near you.

Then Taramati told him that you were my sister in your previous life. You had eaten fish on the day of Ekadashi fast and I punished you by turning you into a lizard. Now you have got a human birth again, so in this birth earn virtue by worshiping Maa Vaishno. By worshiping mother all your wishes will be fulfilled.

After hearing this from Taramati, Rukko prays to Maa Vaishno for a son and says that if her wish is fulfilled, then she will worship and awaken Maa Vaishno Devi in her house. Mother Vaishno Devi listens to his prayer and he has a son. After the birth of a son, Rukko forgets to worship Mother Vaishno Devi while caring for him and pampering him.

Five years passed by and then one day the child contracted smallpox. Troubled by seeing such a condition of the child, Rukko goes to her previous life’s sister Taramati’s house and tells her about the problem.

Then Taramati asked whether you made any mistake in worshiping Mother Vaishno Devi? Then Rukko remembers that she had taken a vow to awaken Mother Vaishno Devi. As soon as she remembered this, Rukko felt very remorseful and in her mind told her mother that as soon as the child got well, she would organize a Jagran in her house. The very next day his son recovers completely. Then Rukko went to the temple of Mata Rani and asked the priests to organize a Jagran in the house on Tuesday.

After listening to Rukko, Pandit says that you give 5 rupees here, we will organize Jagran for you in the temple itself. Rukko says, “I know I am a chamarin, but you come to my house and perform the Jagran. Mother doesn’t discriminate in any way, so you shouldn’t either.”

After discussing this, the pundits said that if the queen comes to your Jagran, then we are ready to come to your house and do the Jagran.

Tara Rani Vrat Katha in English

Hearing the words of the pundits, Rukko goes to her sister Queen Taramati and tells everything to Taramati. Hearing Rukko’s words, Taramati gets ready to go to Jagran. When Rukko goes to Panditji to tell him about this, a barber named Sen overhears their conversation. Then he goes and tells everything to King Harishchandra.

The king thought that the queen should not go to the house of lower caste people for Jagran. For this reason, he cuts his finger, so that he cannot sleep and cannot go to Rani Jagran. Even when it is time for the Jagran, the queen, seeing the king awake, prays to Maa Vaishno Devi in her mind that the King should fall asleep, so that she can go to the Jagran.

The king falls asleep shortly after the queen’s prayer. Then Queen Taramati ties a rope to the skylight and comes down from the palace and goes to Rukko’s house. In this haste, the queen’s silk handkerchief and an anklet bracelet fall on the way.

Here, after some time, King Harishchandra loses his sleep. When he wakes up, the king does not find the queen near him and goes in search of her. While searching for Rani, they find Rani’s handkerchief and bracelet. Taking the queen’s things with him, the king reaches the Jagran place and sits quietly at one place and starts listening to the Jagran.

The Jagran ends with the chanting of Maa Vaishno Devi and prasad is given to everyone. Then the queen puts her share of the offerings in the bag. When Rani does this, people ask her why she is not eating the Prasad. If you do not consume Prasad, then the people who come to the Jagran will also not eat Prasad. Then the queen says that the prasad was for the king, now you give me the prasad. Then the queen takes the prasad for herself and eats it in front of everyone.

As soon as the queen ate the prasad, all the devotees present at the Jagran also ate the prasad. After that the queen leaves for the palace. Then on the way, the king stops him and asks that he has defiled himself by eating prasad from a lower caste house. You have kept prasad for me also. Now you want to defile me with it too? Now I can’t take you to my palace. Saying this, when the king looks at the queen’s bag, instead of Prasad he sees many flowers like roses, champa and raw rice and betel nuts.

The king is surprised to see this miracle. Then the king silently takes the queen with him to the palace. There the queen further surprises King Harishchandra by lighting a lamp in front of Mata Rani without a matchbox. Then the queen says that one has to make a huge sacrifice to have darshan of the mother. For this you will have to sacrifice your son Rohitashva, only then Mother Durga will give you physical darshan.

Hearing this, the king started wishing to see his mother, for which the king sacrifices his son. After the sacrifice, Mother Durga appears riding on a lion. Seeing him, King Harishchandra became very happy and Mother Durga immediately brought the king’s son back to life. Seeing this miracle, King Harishchandra became happy. Then the king worshiped the mother with full rituals and apologized for his mistakes. Mother Durga also blessed the king to be happy and disappeared.

Then the king said to Queen Tara that I am very happy that I have got you as my wife. Then King Harishchandra, Queen Tara and Rukman, all three get rid of their human form and go to heaven.

Lesson from the Tara Rani Katha – Tara Rani Vrat Katha teaches us to do good deeds in life. Man has to suffer the consequences of bad deeds.
