Difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced
JEE Main and JEE Advanced are two of the most important entrance exams in India for students who want to pursue a career in engineering. While both exams are designed to assess a student’s aptitude in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, there are several key differences between the two.
Difficulty Level: One of the primary differences between JEE Main and JEE Advanced is the level of difficulty. JEE Advanced is considered more challenging than JEE Main, with questions that are more complex and require a higher level of analytical skills.
Eligibility: Another key difference between the two exams is the eligibility criteria. To appear for JEE Advanced, students must first qualify for JEE Main and be among the top 2,50,000 students. However, there are no such eligibility criteria for JEE Main.
Number of Attempts: Students can attempt JEE Main a maximum of three times in consecutive years, while JEE Advanced can be attempted only twice in consecutive years.
Exam Pattern: The exam pattern of JEE Main and JEE Advanced also differs significantly. JEE Main consists of two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2, while JEE Advanced has two papers as well, but both of them are compulsory.
Syllabus: Although the syllabus for both exams is similar, JEE Advanced includes topics that are not covered in JEE Main, such as thermal physics, optics, and electromagnetism.
Mode of Exam: JEE Main is conducted in both online and offline mode, while JEE Advanced is conducted only in online mode.
Number of Questions: The number of questions in JEE Main is higher than that in JEE Advanced. JEE Main consists of 75 questions, while JEE Advanced has only 54.

Marking Scheme: The marking scheme for JEE Main is +4 for a correct answer and -1 for an incorrect answer. In JEE Advanced, the marking scheme varies for different sections.
Difficulty Level of Mathematics: Mathematics is considered more difficult in JEE Advanced as compared to JEE Main, with questions that require advanced mathematical skills.
Admission Process: The admission process for JEE Main and JEE Advanced also differs. While JEE Main is used for admission to NITs, IIITs, and other government-funded engineering colleges, JEE Advanced is used for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
