If you say the words “street food” to any seasoned Mumbaikar, they’re likely to turn towards “Vada Pav.” Vada pav is one of Mumbai’s most mobile cuisines. A spiced potato patty with a chickpea batter topping, placed inside a pav with a spicy garlic chutney and sometimes even pickled green chilies to add to the flavour. Vada pav evokes emotions in every Mumbaikar, and it can be found in practically every nook and cranny of the city. However, there are a few places that stand out above the others, and Anand Dosa and Vada Pav shop is one among them.
History of Anand Dosa and Vada Pav
This Mumbai unique staple Anand Dosa and Vada Pav, credited to Ashok Vaidya as an inventor of sorts, is said to have started in the 1960s. Every day, Ashok Vaidya sold fresh poha and batata vada from a hand cart outside Dadar station. Vaidya got the notion to stuff his current batata vada into a pav inspired by Mumbai tradition of putting most foods into a bun to make it more filling.
To enhance the flavour, he added some mint and garlic chutney. As a result, the Vada Pav was born. Today, Ashok Vaidya’s eldest son Narendra Vaidya runs the same vada pav stand in the same location and with some of the same steel pots.
