Lakadhare Ki Kahani in English

Years ago there lived a woodcutter named Radharaman in a city. He would go to the forest every day to cut wood and buy food for himself with whatever money he got from selling it. His daily routine had been going on like this for years. One day a woodcutter climbed a tree next to a river flowing in the forest to cut branches from it. While cutting wood from that tree, the woodcutter’s ax fell down.

The woodcutter quickly got down from the tree and started searching for his axe. He thought that his ax might have fallen near the river and would be found after searching. In reality, nothing like this happened, because his ax fell straight from the tree into the river below. That river was very deep and fast flowing.

The woodcutter kept searching for his axe for half an hour, but when he could not find the wood, he started feeling that he would never get his axe back. This made him very sad. The woodcutter knew that he did not have enough money to buy a new axe. Now he started crying while sitting on the river bank over his situation. Hearing the crying voice of the woodcutter, the river gods came there.

He asked the woodcutter, ‘Son! What happened, why are you crying so much? Have you lost anything in this river? As soon as the river god heard the question, the woodcutter told him the story of his ax falling. As soon as the river god heard the whole story, he asked to help the woodcutter in finding the axe, and went away from there.

After some time, the river god came out of the river and told the woodcutter that I have brought your axe. Hearing the words of the river god, a smile appeared on the woodcutter’s face. Then the woodcutter saw that the river god was holding a golden colored ax in his hands. The woodcutter said with a sad heart, ‘This golden colored ax is not mine at all. This golden ax must have belonged to some rich person. Hearing the words of the woodcutter, the river gods disappeared again.

After some time the river god came out of the river again. This time he had a silver ax in his hands. The woodcutter was not happy even after seeing that axe. He said that this is also not my axe. This must be some other person’s axe. You give this ax to him. I have to find my own axe. This time too, after listening to the woodcutter, the river gods again went away from there.

The God who went into the water came out after a long time this time. Now the woodcutter had a big smile on his face as soon as he saw the deity. He told the river god that this time you have an iron ax in your hand and it seems that it is my axe. A similar ax had fallen from my hand while cutting the stomach. You give this ax to me and return the other axes to their rightful owners.

The river god felt very happy to see such honesty and sinless heart of the woodcutter. He told the woodcutter that there is no greed in your mind at all. If someone else had been in your place, he would have immediately taken the golden axe, but you did not do so at all. You refused to take even the silver axe. All you needed was your iron axe. I am very impressed by your pure and honest heart. I want to gift you an axe, made of both gold and silver. You keep these with you along with your iron axe, as a gift of your honesty.

Moral of the Lakadhare Ki Kahani: There is no greater wealth in this world than honesty. A person with good faith is praised all around.
