Avinash sable earned gold at half marathon: At the Delhi Half Marathon on October 16, 2022, there was a huge competition among the Indian players and in the end, the winner had to be chosen from the photo finish. In the Indian category, hurdles Avinash Sable (1h 3min 58:96sec) and Karthik Kumar (1h 3min 59sec) took the top two spots. Both took about 64 minutes.
Following this, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) Technical Committee declared Avinash Sable the winner of the half marathon after viewing the video. Srinu Bugatha (1 hour 5 minutes 25 seconds) finished third.
Sanjeevani Yadav finished as expected among Indian women with a time of one hour, 17 minutes and 53 seconds. Monica Athara and Preeti Lamba finished second and third with times of 1:18:39 and 1:19:06 respectively.
Meanwhile, Chala Regasa of Ethiopia and Irene Cheptai of Kenya showed their laurels to win the men’s and women’s races respectively. Regasa won the men’s gold medal with a time of one hour and 30 seconds.
Cheptai dominated the women’s event with a personal best time of 1:6:42. Regasa, 25, won the battle between three athletes. He beat Felix Kipkoch from Kenya and Boki Diriba from Ethiopia. Kipkoch and Diriba finished second and third with times of 1:00:33 and 1:00:34 respectively.
Chala Regasa later said: “The last two kilometers were very difficult, but I knew I had enough speed to beat my rivals, as I have a good record in short distance races.” However, after completing half the race, Cheptai dominated. He took the lead after 12km and after that no other player was able to challenge him.
He bettered his previous record by one second. Davit Seyum of Ethiopia and Stella Chesang of Uganda finished second and third in the women’s competition. They marked 1 h 08 min 02 s and 1 h 08 min 11 s respectively.
